Andrea Buglisi is an artist who was born in Palermo in 1974, where he currently lives and works. He studied Decoration at the Academy of Fine Arts of Palermo graduating in 1998 and is mainly active in the painting field since 2000. He often likes to experiment with hybrid techniques that mix painting and other means of expression.
Andrea himself describes his artistic research as a sort of "visual trap" made of bright chromatic solutions inspired by pop culture and advertisement. Behind this aspect, whose purpose is to immediately attract the attention of the observer, there's however a deeper level of criticism towards society, its conventions and obsessions, of which Andrea offers a troubled yet ironic look.
Andrea Buglisi's artworks have been on display in a number of personal and collective exhibitions, both in Italy and abroad.
On July 2018, the artist took part in an artistic project aimed at rehabilitating the Albergheria district in Palermo. He realised one of the five wall paintings that you can still find in the area. « The representation of the late 90s focuses on its ability to project reality in a cinematographic and comic-book way. This reality appears as a patchwork of elements drawn from mass communication culture and children games. Andrea Buglisi's painting deals with the imaginary surrounding advertising: writings, products, captivating looks, brightly coloured puppets. The pop matrix is counterbalanced by some considerations which don't concern only mass production and consumption (that is, the relationship between merchandise and collective use), but are more related to the artist's individual experience. The kind of "consumption" he analyses concerns a different context, territorial and personal: the shaving foam Nigrausen (the name Andrea uses with his friends), the dish soap Sole Piatti and the drink is going to be gazzosa or some tavern Sicilian wine, certainly not coca cola. » (Emilia Valenza)
