Simone Geraci is a painter, engraver and illustrator who lives and works in Palermo, city where he was also born in 1985 and where he attended the Academy of Fine Arts, graduating in Art Graphics in 2012. He currently works with many art galleries and publishing houses. He's been Artistic Director of the collective book Il Palindromo (The Palindrome)since 2014.
In 2017 he was awarded the Be Natural Be Wild prize. Later, he also was among the winners of the Marchionni Award, in the Painting and Graphics section.
In 2018 he took part in an exhibition at the Teodora Galerie in Paris and, later on, he also participated at the collective exhibition Komm mich nach Palermo at the Institution of Italian Culture in Vienna.
The common theme of all his work is an analysis of the individual and his loss of direction. In his paintings, this is marked by a centralised representation of the subjects and an invitation to observe them introspectively. His artistic research aims at recovering the European tradition of the past, something he does for example by using slate as support for his work. With its dark and opaque surface, slate allows him to deepen the image and to make the contrast between the background and the colour stronger. That's also why his paintings are often monochromatic.
The artist himself describes his research as follows:
«Androgynous figures, light and dreamy, in paintings that seem to let out a silent cry, amplified by the emptiness that surrounds it. They are all trapped in geometrical landscapes, solid volumes that tower over and paralyse them. The figures are defenceless, immersed in a primordial amber. (...) There's a constant game of reciprocal references between the artwork and the observer. The distribution and variation of the colour, together with the physical contradictions of slate, highlight the bond between the parts involved, necessary so that an artwork can be exactly that, a work of art.»
